Reducing medical malpractice

Pennsylvania residents may benefit from learning more about the facts concerning medical malpractice in the United States. Over 85,000 medical malpractice cases and 1 million medical injuries are reported every year. Generally speaking, hospital administrators view any report of a medical injury as a potential malpractice lawsuit. During 2014, there were around 7,000 deaths from medication errors and about 12,000 died from unnecessary surgeries.

Maternal mortality rising in America

Current and future Pennsylvania mothers might be alarmed to learn that overall rates of maternal mortality have been rising over the past few decades in the United States. In fact, experts with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that the rate at which American women are dying during pregnancy or childbirth has more than doubled what it was during the 1980s.

Lyme disease and misdiagnoses

Pennsylvania residents who enjoy the great outdoors may be interested to learn that Lyme disease testing and diagnostic methods may be significantly unreliable. Some statistics indicate that laboratory testing only correctly confirms about half of all cases. One physician who specializes in diseases spread by ticks noted that early diagnosis and treatment are essential. There are approximately 300,000 cases reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention each year.

Breast cancer misdiagnosis may lead to medical malpractice claim

Many Pennsylvania women may be living proof that breast cancer can be overcome. However, those are likely the cases in which early detection, diagnoses and timely treatment secured survival. Unfortunately, many cases of breast cancer are misdiagnosed because biopsy results or mammogram images are misinterpreted, mixed up or misread. A delay in cancer diagnosis can have serious implications and may even lead to premature death, and it is not surprising that many medical malpractice lawsuits result from such negligence.

PA sees drop in medical malpractice suits: Is this good news?

Statistics can be tricky, in part, because they don't always tell the full story. Without proper context, statistics can be misleading - and that's sometimes the intent of those who cite them. Here's a good example: The number of medical malpractice lawsuits filed in Pennsylvania courts last year was roughly 50 percent fewer than were filed just over a decade ago.

What is medical malpractice, anyway?

Toward the end of his life, Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart said that he had second thoughts about a statement he made in a 1964 opinion. He had recanted earlier, but in this interview he admitted that he hoped he would not be remembered for saying, "I know it when I see it." He was talking about hard-core pornography.
