Springtime in Pennsylvania will bring rain, strong wind

With the winter months having officially just come to an end on the calendar, it won't be long before you're looking forward to warmer spring weather. While this is coming soon enough, our Pennsylvania readers are well aware that springtime also brings quite a bit of rain and strong wind.

Inclement weather may not bother you when you're inside your home, but it's a different story when operating a motor vehicle. If you find yourself driving in heavy rain this spring season, here are some tips to follow:

  • Slow down: The best thing you can do is slow down, as this helps you maintain control over your vehicle. Also, leave more time to reach your destination, as this lessens the likelihood of speeding.
  • Use your headlights: Not only does this improve visibility, but it helps other drivers, such as those driving in the opposite direction, see your vehicle.
  • Leave more space to stop: It takes longer to stop your vehicle on slick roads, so you should leave an additional one to two car lengths. Doing so can be the difference between avoiding an accident and striking someone from behind.

Strong wind calls for a variety of adjustments as well, such as:

  • Keep both hands on the wheel: When the wind is blowing, you're more likely to be knocked off your course of travel. By keeping two hands on the wheel, you're able to maintain full control.
  • Watch for wind gusts: There are certain areas where gusts are more common, such as when driving over a bridge or at high altitudes.
  • Beware of high profile vehicles: Commercial trucks, for example, have a high center of gravity. This makes them more difficult to control in strong wind, especially if the trucker doesn't slow down.

In Pennsylvania, spring is one of the most enjoyable times of the year. From the warmer weather to the changing of the leaves, you don't want to miss out.

Unfortunately, when bad weather strikes, the risk of a motor vehicle accident is much greater.

If another driver causes an accident, don't attempt to get out of your vehicle. Instead, call 911, check yourself for injuries and remain calm until help arrives.

Once you receive treatment and contact your insurance company, you can learn more about your legal rights. For more information on the steps to take after an accident, visit the many pages of our website dedicated to protecting you.
