Egregious medical errors have killed and injured patients

It is common for patients in Pennsylvania hospitals to put a lot of trust in their practitioners. However, doctors are capable of committing egregious errors, and patients must remain vigilant about their own health care experience. Though doctors save many people's lives, they have also caused patient deaths and injuries.

Receiving a timely cancer diagnosis is very important for a patient's outcome, but being incorrectly diagnosed with the disease can be devastating. A woman who was told she had severe cancer had the left side of her chin removed so that she could live a few months longer. After disfiguring the mother of two children, doctors informed her that she had never actually had cancer at all. In another botched surgery, doctors successfully removed a tumor in a man's abdomen but left a 13-inch metal surgical tool inside of the patient.

One of the worst medical mistakes that can happen during an operation is wrong-site surgery. When a man in Florida went into the hospital to have his leg amputated, doctors removed the wrong leg. Another surgical error occurred when a man experienced anesthetic awareness during surgery. The 73-year-old man felt all of the pain from his procedure and committed suicide two weeks later due to trauma.

Mistakes such as wrong-site surgery or leaving objects inside a patient's body after a procedure are referred to as "never events" simply because they are avoidable. Unfortunately, these types of errors are still far too common, and a person who has been harmed by this type of hospital negligence may want to have the assistance of an attorney in seeking appropriate compensation.
